It’s a well written book for the novice such as myself. However, in some cases, the author assumes a certain level of knowledge, at which level I’m not. What keeps me from rating it a 5 is a couple of footnotes defining some terms. Nevertheless, I am learning and enjoying it.
Material is invaluable, the edition not so great but anyway... I imagined fully bright and colourful pages showing graphs and charts with tips, specially by it's price. Looks more like a photocopy set of a rough script. But I repeat the content is what matters.
It's an essential book, but I don't find it specially bright enough in some aspects that Owsinski touches, i.e. the arrangement, he states his personal view and seems to differ from serious books speaking about structure and arrangement. It's good if you start from scratch to get to know basic stuff about type of reverbs, how a compressor/gate works, which are the basic 6 elements of a good mix, or the history of mixing, studios, etc.Specially oriented for the classic mixing engineer. If you are a modern mixing aspirant for styles like electronic music or hip hop you will find it too old dated in techniques. Although, the info shared in this book is basic and important but not essential in my opinion. It's good to start from the bottom if you like that way to do the things, but if you practically want to learn directly the technical stuff, I know much better options to read. Buy this book if you want to know about classic engineer's and a bit of history of all since half of the book are interviews. I would read it again if you ask me, but I know there could be a much better and complete book in the field, cutting some information and adding practical and modern techniques.
A few months ago, I thought mixing was mostly a matter of adjusting volume levels on each instrument or vocal. After recording a couple of my songs, I quickly realized that there's way more to it. I'm slowly learning....the mixes are getting better...and this book has been a huge help.
Fantastic resource, part 2 is AWESOME hearing from the best mixing engineers in history. The real guys who did the Beatles, Stones, Floyd, Elton John, MJ, Steely Dan... the list goes on. Filled with gems. Can't wait to read his book on mastering now!
There are so many authors, blogs, videos etc. on mixing out there. Sometimes the different suggestions you get are confusing or contradictory to each other. I have decided to follow one line of advice from now on, i.e. Bobbby Owsinski, his books and his online courses. Bobby has been an author in this field for many years and to me seems to be the most experienced.
Very well presented. Strait up about mixing the right way.
Full of great information and insider tips in an easy to read and follow format.
